Featured Artist: Matt Williams & the Ocean
At age 25, Asheville based multi-instrumentalist Matt Williams reaches listeners with his unique approach to songwriting and improvising. With four records underneath his belt, and a fifth album set to release Summer of 2010, he is quickly becoming one of the most in-demand artist in the region.
His debut album, “First Light”, was recorded when he was just sixteen years old. Since it’s release, in 2001, Williams has independently produced three additional records, each exploring new concepts and music genres.
Because of his varying approaches to music, Matt’s live shows have remained variety-filled and continually interesting for fans that have followed his career. Using the art of live loop-sampling, Matt layers the colors of his full array of string instruments alongside various percussion elements (guitar percussion, hand drums, shakers) to create the surprisingly-thick sound of his solo performances. When performing with others, Matt is accompanied by some of the best players from around the region.
His latest release, “Particles – Volume 1″ (2007), boasts contrasting tunes of mass and simplicity, preaching the album’s concept that “All of us are ONE” while his 2005 effort, “Your Last Make-Believe”, is a reminder to keep dreams alive.
Coming in 2010, the Mended Heart Records debut release “Symphonies In Sea”: A tale of woman’s ocean-like essence and her moonman’s struggles to rhythm her ever-changing waves. A return to marketability, the album promises to be a listener’s record. Enlisting the stylings of Asheville’s finest jazz and pop players, the new music will be sure to turn the heads of even the most critical listeners.
